Out of interest, what would your advice have been to the British in 1940? I think you are incorrect on a number of your conclusions. I don’t think it’s inevitable that Putin will win or that time is on his side. The west has a much greater productive capacity and eventually the Russians will quit. Sometimes you have to continue to resist evil. As evil wins when good men do nothing
I would refrain from equating both situations. If that's how we do everything, no peace settlement would ever be signed again, no agreement would ever be trusted, and we would just fight till the death every time we have a disagreement.
I would argue Putin and Russia aren't 1940s Hitler and Germany. And Europe (or US) today is not in the desperate and impoverished state it was back then, after VWI.
Make peace, but ensure that history cannot repeat itself with actions afterwards. That is why I'm so against isolatism, and would almost enforce inclusion of Russia back into global trade (remembering what poverty and demands for repayment did to germany back then), giving it all incentives to stop Putin and his successors from being murderous dickheads.
Nothing is stopping us from rebuilding our armies, as well, in case we are wrong. Carrot and a stick.
Russia has the time because of its vast resources, cheap labor, and a government that doesn't much care for the human and economic costs of the current war, while we do. All I’ve learned about their capabilities in this regard, suggests they can keep this war going indefinitely.
The fact is, that anything can happen. The appeasement in 1940 could have worked. The end of WWI could have been the final war, but it wasn't. Any mistake on the political field today can cause a World War III or a nuclear apocalypse, or it can all turn into a nothingburger.
To answer your question - I don’t know. I wasn’t there. All I can see is what happened - World War II. Could they have stopped Hitler before? Without going to war? Nobody knows. We are being generals after the battle, which is of no use to anyone.
Thanks for reading and your comment. It is appreciated.
